Self Care - Taking care of you

SELF CARE

definition: “Self Care in health refers to the activities individuals, families and communities undertake with the intention of enhancing health, preventing disease, limiting illness, and restoring health. These activities are derived from knowledge and skills from the pool of both professional and lay experience. They are undertaken by lay people on their own behalf, either separately or in participative collaboration with professionals.” - World Health Organization (WHO). Health Education in Self-Care: Possibilities and Limitations. Report of a Scientific Consultation. Geneva, Switzerland. November 21–25, 1983

I propose we begin taking time for ourselves. Dedicate at least 10 minutes to yourself each day.

In today's society we are masters of multi-tasking. We push ourselves to the limit day after day. Pretty soon, this maxed out mode becomes our default. Our stress baseline has moved.

Taking time for yourself every day gives your body and mind a moment to be still. To relax.

You may say you don't have time to meditate, to take a yoga class, take time for yourself. You've seen the memes which comment, 'if you don't have the time then you most need to find the time.' I think it's true.

Devoting time to yourself may be difficult at first, but with time and dedication it becomes easier, becomes necessary.

Keep watch for my upcoming 30 Days of Self Care posts.

Each post will have tips and suggestions for finding balance in your life. Not every suggestion may be right for you. Some may be out of your comfort zone. If you're living life at the max and can't figure out how to slow down, give it a try.

Giving yourself at least 10 minutes each day can be a precious gift.
